Healthy Eating Habits

A dietitian can help you review what is influencing your food choices, and can help you with working through the barriers and find solutions. Reconnecting with your hunger and fullness cues, and tuning in to the reasons why you are eating, can help you to have a healthier relationship with food.
This can be particularly helpful for those with emotional eating, disordered eating, or those who are finding it difficult to make the food choices they are wanting to be making.
What Could be Holding You Back:
Eating is not as simple as knowing what to eat and then eating it. There is a lot that goes on in your mind when choosing what to eat.
There can be barriers holding you back from making the food choices that you are wanting to make, such as:
- unhealthy coping behaviours for managing stress, emotions, and boredom
- learned behaviours
- feeling too busy or too tired
- decreased motivation
- craving the foods that your taste buds are accustomed to
- unsure what foods to eat or how to cook
- social pressure
Healthy eating does not mean eating "healthy" 100% of the time. Health is not just about physical health, but also all aspects of health including wellbeing and social connectedness.
Small amounts of the food that is considered "unhealthy" is not going to harm your health. What harms health is having too much of those foods too often. By considering the reasons why you are eating certain foods, you can learn more about how you can include more nutritious food to your daily routine, and also feel more confident in knowing when the right time is for having treats.
